Sunshine Arts began as a modest mat cutting business started by Jim Franklin out of his apartment in Waikiki in 1996 with his last $20.00, a used mat cutter, and a borrowed $100.00. He began by visiting the artists at the zoo fence in Waikiki and offering to cut mats for them. He also called all the photographers in the phone book and picked up a few customers there.
A year later Jim was offered a commercial location in a vacated building on the Windward side of Oahu which was run down and out of the way but the rent was cheap so he took a chance and moved in. The building was located on the only road following the coast on the eastern side of the island so therefore, if you take a drive around the island you will have to drive by Sunshine Arts!
