In 1971 Barton Decker and a few of his friends came down to Hatteras to open a Surf Shop in the quiet town of Waves, NC. At the time there wasn't much there, only 25 mailboxes for residents at the post office. They came to surf and spend their summer away from home in what they considered paradise.
What was going to be just a few summers turned into over 40 years. We have broadened our horizons over the years and fell in love with Windsurfing, Kiting, and Paddleboarding. Though a lot has changed since then, there is at least one thing that hasn't: our love for the water and our passion for these sports.

History
Report
The original Hatteras Island Surf Shop opened in Waves, NC in 1971. The building which was torn down about 10 years ago was located just south of the "new" shop, which is now the parking lot for Hatteras Realty. The shop was formerly a general store and the Waves, NC Post Office, and had been abandoned for a half dozen years before we moved in.
Kiteboarding Lessons

At HISS we have a small lesson staff of 3-4 experianced instructors. We have Barton Decker with over 10 years kiteboarding teaching experience and his son and sponsored Airush rider Reider Decker with over 6 years of teaching experience. We only have people working for us that are as stoked and care as much about teaching as we do.
Windsurfing Lessons
Report
After years of being fed up with the constant wind on Hatteras messing up the surf, Barton started windsurfing on Hatteras in the 70's and came to love it on the sound and ocean side. The constant wind and flat water or waves makes Hatteras a fantastic place to windsurf. Our Sail Shop is located right on the sound side providing easy access to excellent conditions.
Surf Lessons
Report
Board & Water Safety: We spend the first few minutes of the lesson going over rip currents, water safety, and how to handle your board safely when you are in the water. Paddle & Pop: Next on land we practice placement on the board, paddle technique, and popping up on your feet. Take it to the water: Finally we swim out with you and help you take everything you have learned on land to the water.
Surfboard Rentals
Report
Hatteras offers some, if not the best surfing on the East Coast. Hatteras is positioned far offshore from the main land and is able to get more consistent swell then a lot of the US East Coast. The challenging thing about surfing in Hatteras is it can change so quickly. The swell can build or die, the wind can change directions or pick up, both at any moment so we always try to live by carpe diem, or seize the day!
