Experience Bold Theater at Mad Horse Theatre
Mad Horse Theatre has been dedicated to exploring the human experience through professional theater since 1986. Our company produces thought-provoking interpretations of contemporary works and dramatic classics, focusing on social concerns, personal transformation, and community building. Based in South Portland, we operate a 50-seat black-box theater that allows actors to rehearse and perform in the same intimate space. Our productions have contributed to Maine's artistic landscape while fostering important social discourse. We maintain a commitment to accessibility through our pay-what-you-decide ticketing model. The company's history includes over 35 years of innovative programming that challenges audiences and celebrates diverse perspectives. Our work serves as a platform for voices that might otherwise be silenced, creating a space for reflection and dialogue. The theater's physical space at 24 Mosher Street provides both mainstage productions and special events like Dark Horse Nights. We collaborate with local artists and organizations to strengthen community relationships through the arts. Our programming continues to evolve while maintaining the founding mission of examining what it means to be human.

This is theater that stretches your mind. Intimate, fine acting, and always something special happening. The best chocolate chip cookies, too!

This was my first experience at a true theater. So my option should be limited. We had a great time watching Love Sucks, the interaction with the crowd was spot on. A very small place but I feel that is what added to the experience of watching the performers , litterally inches away. Really can't wait to go again.

Mad Horse is a fantastic place to enjoy theatre in Maine. Not only do they put on great shows, they give so much back to the community that you feel like you're watching the improvement of Maine theatre happen around you. Their small warehouse black box feels cramped at first, but show after show I am amazed at seeing what they can do and how they can morph their space. The three-sided audience keeps you in the atmosphere of the play while also allowing you to simultaneously experience art with a total stranger. Pay what you can tickets offered for every show, and fantastic student discounts

Saw a hilarious farce there. Great actors, friendly staff, and a fun little stage. All in all a great experience.
