Owner Chris Nicholas moved from Pittsburgh to Charleston shortly before Hurricane Hugo devastated the Lowcountry in 1989. People were removing trees and leaving stumps, so Chris and his wife, Jayne, a native of Charleston, bought a stump grinder and began Charleston Stump Stompers. Within three years they had grown their company from a stump removal service to a full-service, expert tree company.
