Language Development Delays
Report
Language delays are more complex as they involve a child's cognitive ability to understand and express meaning. Language delays are fairly common, affecting up to 10 percent of pre-school age children in the U.S. With speech language therapy, the majority of these children are able to catch up to their peers and go on to succeed in school and typical communication situations.
Pragmatic Language Disorders
Report
A language disorder affects a child's ability to understand the meaning behind verbal and/or nonverbal language. Pragmatic language disorders specifically affect a child's ability to understand how language is used in social contexts. This is also known as a social communication disorder. These children may have large vocabularies; however, are unable to functionally use the vocabulary.
