Concrete Foundations
Report
Footings are an important part of foundation construction. They are typically made of concrete with rebar reinforcement that has been poured into an excavated trench. The purpose of footings is to support the foundation and prevent settling. Footings are especially important in areas with troublesome soils.
Slabs on Grade
Report
A concrete slab is a common structural element of modern buildings, consisting of a flat, horizontal surface made of cast concrete. Steel-reinforced slabs, typically between 4 and 12 in thick, are most often used to construct floors. In many domestic and industrial buildings, a thick concrete slab supported on foundations or directly on the subsoil, is used to construct the ground floor.
Concrete Staircases
Report
Stairs are a key feature of any multi-level structure, including industrial, commercial and residential buildings. Not only is the design of the staircase important, but also the materials selected for construction. Concrete staircases are popular for outdoor use but can also be used as the base of stairs in commercial and residential buildings that are then covered with other materials.
Retaining Walls
Report
Retaining walls provide lateral support to vertical slopes of soil. They retain soil which would otherwise collapse into a more natural shape. The retained soil is sometimes referred to as backfill. In most states, retaining wall designs taller than about four feet must be designed by or approved by a qualified, licensed professional engineer.
