Building a Sustainable Food System in the Hudson Valley
Since 2004, Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture has been dedicated to transforming the food system through innovative research, education, and community engagement. Our interdisciplinary approach integrates farming, culinary arts, and ecological science to promote human health, strengthen local communities, and protect soil health. Located in the Hudson Valley, we operate a 450-acre living laboratory in partnership with the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, where farmers, chefs, and scientists collaborate to develop sustainable agricultural practices. Our work includes trialing climate-resilient crops, implementing multi-species rotational grazing, and creating educational programs that connect people to the land. Through partnerships with institutions like Cornell University and Blue Hill Restaurant, we advance research on topics ranging from cover crop optimization to waste-fed livestock systems.

Our Conservation Action Plan demonstrates how regenerative farming can support land conservation, while our LEAF initiative improves food access in underserved communities. We offer immersive experiences including farm tours, culinary workshops, and seasonal dining events that showcase our ecological principles. Our team adheres to the highest standards of animal welfare, biodiversity management, and soil regeneration, serving as a model for sustainable agriculture. With over two decades of experience, we continue to pioneer practices that balance agricultural productivity with environmental stewardship. Our commitment to transparency and community engagement makes us a trusted leader in the movement for ecological food systems.

You used to be able to park your car for free and walk on the grounds, I believe they charged only on the weekends. Not anymore. What a shame.

Visited the grounds of Stone Barns and also walked around the adjacent Rockefeller State Park. You can pre-order or walk-in to the Stone Barns Cafe and have a nice, large lunch after your hike. Delicious.

The cafe and restaurant were closed when we visited. However, we had the chance to roam around the grounds. The property is gorgeous! Will definitely come back to visit the restaurant.

One meal at the restaurant, while desirable, would cover our monthly food budget (we cook at home and shop at TJ and Aldi's) but the little coffee and pastry shop is a wonderful place to visit on a walk through Rockefeller State Park. A lot of people seem to agree as the courtyard was packed on a sunny Saturday. We had a perfect cup of tea and enjoyed looking at the buildings and surrounding nature. A treasure and a place that does terrific things with food. Dog and kid friendly.

I can't comment on tours or paid admission events, but during the off-hours, we take our kids here to walk around. The farm is beautiful in its setting, well maintained, and picturesque to say the least. If you're driving through the area or simply need to refresh, the cafe has some outstanding baked goods and coffee.
