Many people suffer from obesity-significant excess total body fat due to diet, metabolism, and exercise imbalances. It's a chronic disease that afflicts more than 60 million Americans. That's why more and more people are turning to medical methods like weight-loss surgery, also called obesity surgery or bariatric surgery.

Also called gastric sleeve surgery, sleeve gastrectomy is the most common weight-loss surgery performed by our bariatric surgeons in the Naples-Fort Myers, Florida area. This surgical weight-loss procedure involves detaching a portion of the stomach, leaving only a small banana-shaped "sleeve" and also reduces the hunger hormone, Grehlin.

Also known as the Roux-en-Y, gastric bypass is a weight-loss surgical procedure that involves stapling the stomach to create a smaller pouch. Then this new pouch is connected directly to the lower small intestine, bypassing the main stomach, duodenum, and upper small intestine. As a result, patients eat less and absorb fewer calories.

One type of weight loss surgery is adjustable gastric banding. This surgery involves placing an inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The gastric band is inflated, shrinking the upper stomach pouch, restricting stomach capacity, which helps you eat less and feel full longer.
