Our Story
Report
With backgrounds in design, sisters Colleen and Maggie Clines lead the organization by placing design and collaboration at the center of Anchal's practice. It all started in a design studio. Colleen Clines was taking a graduate seminar at the Rhode Island School of Design that took her on a trip to India in 2009.
Team
Report
Anchal is based on the philosophy that we can create positive change in the world through collaboration in design. We are a team of designers, storytellers, activists, and dreamers. Colleen values how design can become the tool for sustainable solutions to gender inequality, social injustice, and environmental degradation.
Designing Change
Report
At Anchal, design is our passion, and using design to impact lives has become our purpose. We believe design and interdisciplinary collaboration can be a catalyst for positive change. As a non-profit social enterprise, we use design thinking to create innovative solutions to tackle social inequalities and reform traditional textile manufacturing practices.
Design Philosophy
Report
At Anchal, our designs blend the traditional, handmade craft with contemporary design-revolutionizing handmade textiles for the modern home. We honor the past and slow fashion movement by hand-stitching one-of-a-kind, pieces that reduce fabric waste and are made from eco-friendly low-impact dyes, vintage fabric and GOTS certified organic cotton.
Social Impact
Report
Rooted in collaboration and innovative design solutions, Anchal is a non-profit that operates like a business. By driving impact through product sales versus donations alone, we are confident in the long-term sustainability of our initiatives.

Our programs demonstrate that when we systematically address employment inequality, we can reduce the number of women reliant on commercial sex work and eliminate the stigma that women and girls face around the world.95% of Anchal artisans have left the commercial sex trade or dramatically reduced their clients.
