Yunomi Pottery Studio

Yunomi Pottery Studio was founded in 2009 by Chyako Hashimoto, a native of Japan whose journey into pottery began during her college years in America. Under the mentorship of David Hunt, who taught clay as a metaphor for life, Chyako discovered her artistic identity and dedicated herself to sharing this craft. With over two decades of teaching experience, including roles at Colorado Timberline Academy and Fort Lewis College, she established Yunomi as a space where technical skill and personal growth intersect. The studio emphasizes small-group learning, fostering community connections while introducing students to mindfulness practices that enhance their creative process. Chyako's philosophy centers on patience, presence, and the joy of discovery, particularly for beginners navigating the challenges of wheel-throwing.

The studio's location within Durango's historic Smiley Building provides a collaborative environment among artists and creatives. Through seasonal six-week sessions, students develop foundational skills while benefiting from Chyako's extensive training with master potters across Colorado. The studio's intimate setting supports both solitude and relationship-building, reflecting Chyako's belief that pottery teaches wisdom through tactile engagement.
