Services
History
Report
Neighborhood Legal Services began as a project of the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo in late 1965, with funding created as an outgrowth of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty. Initially, NLS had four neighborhood offices located in Buffalo and Lackawanna neighborhoods with the largest concentration of low-income residents.
Employment Opportunities
Report
We provide free legal services to people with low-income and people with disabilities, since 1965. Our staff is dedicated to representing the poor and fight poverty through consistent high quality legal work. NLS seeks to hire three (3) Paralegals for our Housing, Family Law and Disability units. Paralegals are generally responsible for supporting attorneys, counsel and advice, case management, intake, and community education.
Attorney Volunteers
Report
The Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) of Neighborhood Legal Services offers attorneys a chance to volunteer their time and expertise. No experience in the particular field is necessary and we will train you in the area you volunteer. NLS staffs an Attorney of the Morning Program (AMP) at Buffalo City Court and Niagara Falls City Court to assist low-income tenants facing eviction.
Student Volunteers
Report
NLS accepts student volunteers throughout the year in our various offices and areas of practice. Undergraduate students and law students are encouraged to apply. NLS also participates in externship programs and pro bono scholarship programs (such as the Buffalo Public Interest Law Program at UB Law School).
