In more than 20 years as a psychologist, I've developed a significant respect for the ways people conduct their lives in spite of daunting problems. Sometimes this requires careful attention to the impact of problems which may not have been fully described. This is especially the case when people come to me quite beaten down by events in their lives.

One of my intentions in therapy is to help restore a sense of dignity to lives that have been harmed in this way. At other times, I focus on helping clients notice skills, knowledge and moments in their lives that are at odds with the problem.

The Influence of Story in Therapy
Report
Almost without thinking of it, we tell stories about ourselves. We tell stories about what "kind" of person we are. We tell stories about the experiences that shaped us. We tell stories about how we imagine our life will unfold.

These stories of our past, our identity and our future help to "make us up."I gravitated to the story metaphor in my work during the mid-1990s when I began to study Narrative Therapy, a practice developed by Michael White and David Epston.Narrative Therapy differed from a more traditional focus on emotions, cognitions and behaviors.
My Background
Report
Since receiving my psychology license in 1997, I've worked with families, couples and individuals, first in California, and now in Portland, Maine. I like to be active and collaborative with clients in addressing problems. I maintain a sense of hopefulness about the possibility of change. On my first session as a therapist, I met with a family.
