OPEN WINGS POTTERY & GALLERY is a unique, eclectic collection of over 50 artists and crafters from the upper peninsula and greater Great Lakes region. Located in Munising, on the south shore of Lake Superior, the gallery was the inspiration of artist owners, Thomas Baugnet (pronounced bo-nay) and Jill Zwemer (zway-mer) Baugnet in 2005.

Change is in the air, and we have a big announcement to share with you! New location in 2022! Moving forward with a long term vision, in our world, is never "set in stone" (just in stoneware hahaha). When we opened the gallery 15 years ago, we had a hope and dream to create a successful business, that included supporting other local artists, and the arts, in our community.

Pottery
Report
Open Wings Pottery is high-fired stoneware that is very functional and ergonomically friendly. The "recipe" for our clay body was formulated by Thomas, after years of study in pottery, and experience with different types of clay. Fired to 2300 degrees, this clay body is very durable and versatile-all pieces are dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe.
The Process
Report
The alchemy from clay to pottery is a fascinating, multifaceted, and time-consuming process. Basically, there are 4 major changes that occur with the melding of artist, clay, kiln, & minerals: first, the clay is formed, then trimmed and dried; next, bisque fired; finally, glazed and refired.

The steps in pottery making are definite, yet variables are limitless; some are within the artist's control, and some are driven by Mother Nature or the "Kiln Gods ".Forming is done on the pottery wheel (called "throwing"), or by hand building (pinching, coils, slabs), or by draping/shaping over a premade form.
Pottery Studio/Farmstead
Report
Our home studio, affectionately known as "the playroom", is where creative endeavors (and plant starts in early spring) grow and emerge into form. Occasionally, classes by some of the gallery's artists, are held here. We do have plans to develop a small retail space within the studio building, as well.
