The Bitter Root Land Trust is a private, non-profit organization that partners with landowners and our community to conserve clean water, wildlife habitat, and working farms and ranches in and around the Bitterroot Valley for present and future generations.

We envision a Bitterroot Valley with abundant, clean water and access for all to our namesake river; thriving working farms and ranches-the lifeblood of our economy; open, scenic vistas; healthy wildlife habitat that supports diverse native and migratory species; strong connections between people and the land that support ecological, economic, and community health for all.

What’s at Stake
Report
Imagine the Bitterroot Valley without its verdant green fields dotted with cows and calves. Or native westslope cutthroat trout weren't here to fish. Or the familiar silhouette of an osprey overhead. Like many rural and beautiful mountain valleys, growth and development can outpace conservation. Agricultural land, wildlife habitat, evergreen forests, and access to our creeks and rivers are lost each year.
Conserve Your Land
Report
Everyone conserves their land for different reasons, but they all have something in common: they love their land. By discussing your cherished property with you, we can assess the protection opportunities that best fit you and your property's resources, your financial or charitable objectives, and your vision for the future of your land.
Conservation Easements
Report
A conservation easement is a legally binding agreement made between the landowner and Bitter Root Land Trust that limits the development rights on your property. This is done to protect the natural, agricultural, scenic, or historic values inherent to the farms, forests, rivers and streams, and wildlife of the Bitterroot Valley.
Stewardship
Report
Permanent conservation means not only protecting land, but keeping it in good condition, too. We work side-by-side with landowners to protect their cherished lands and we are committed to partnering with landowners to uphold the terms of the conservation easement through stewardship practices and annual monitoring.
