Eighteen miles south of San Angelo, Texas, nature enthusiasts are welcome to visit the Hummer House located near the banks of the spring-fed South Concho River. While this west Texas oasis is unique for its natural beauty, it is distinguished from other wildlife habitats because of thousands of tiny hummingbird inhabitants.
The Hummer House is the summer home to Texas' largest concentration of breeding Black-chinned Hummingbirds. Numerous bird species are native to the area and are joined by migrant birds as the season change. The largest number of deer are seen during fall, winter and spring. Wild turkeys migrate into the thickets with their young in September and groups number into the hundreds.

Thank you so much for sharing your ranch, your birds, your food, your time and yourselves with all of us this weekend. We had planned a restful and refreshing weekend away from our usual lives, but our time at the Lodge exceeded all of our expectations. Both of you certainly went above and beyond what we usually expect from B&B hosts.
Camp Discovery
Report
For many years, Dan and I contributed our time and resources to several outdoor education programs held at the HEB Foundation Camp near Leakey, Texas. We no longer participate in HEB Camp but love the concept of outdoor education. With the success of the first camp, Camp Discovery is now held for Christoval ISD 4th graders the last Thursday in April every year.
Bird Banding
Report
The Hummer House is located along the South Concho River corridor which serves as a natural flyway for a large number of passerine and near-passerine species that migrate through west central Texas, thus making the Hummer House a perfect location for bird banding research for more than twenty years.

Spring is everywhere at the Hummer House these days! Lots of bluebonnets are blooming. We are already feeding a couple of gallons of sugar water every day to the hummingbirds. More and more female hummers are arriving daily and are pulling the nesting cotton for their nest building. Our birding classes were the biggest success ever.
