What You Can Do
Report
The first step to dealing with hearing loss is an exam by an audiologist. It is easy, painless, and will determine what kind of hearing loss you have so you can get the help you need. Depending on the cause of hearing loss, an audiologist can advise you on the most appropriate treatment, which may not necessarily include amplification.
Why See an Audiologist
Report
Seeing an audiologist ensures that you will receive the best possible care for your hearing, balance, or tinnitus problems. An audiologist has years of education in disorders of the ear and is the only healthcare professional who can perform diagnostic hearing exams. An audiologist is knowledgeable in all functions and disorders of the ear and will ensure that you receive appropriate treatment options.
Hearing Loss Prevention
Report
We can't always control when we have a problem with our ears - particularly if it is a medical problem. We CAN protect our ears from loud noise, which is the leading cause of hearing loss. Awarenss of loud sounds is the first step. Everyday sound such as music, yard equipment, power tools and firearms are common sources of hazardous noise and can damage hearing.
Medications Toxic to the Ear
Report
Some medications can be toxic to the ear. These are called ototoxic medications. The effects of these medications vary significantly. Some have a minor risk of hearing loss and some are almost assured to cause significant hearing loss and/or balance problems. The severity of damage to the ear is also dependent on dosage and how long they are taken.
