Cathy Winter is an experienced teacher, guitarist and vocalist who enjoys teaching everything from beginning to advanced guitar. She helps students find and play the music they are interested in. Whether lessons are basic or advanced, for adults or children, Cathy's priority is to help students play music they love as they improve their guitar playing and their musical skills.

Young students know there's something about the guitar they love, something about it that appeals to them. I give them easy pieces to play right away, using tablature so they can enjoy playing real music on their instrument in their first lesson.
I gradually build in their knowledge of different musical styles and pieces along with musical skills and the basics of a music education - scales, chords, music notation and some ear training and theory - always keeping an ear out to be sure they are enjoying the music they play.I help students develop good practice habits, working to respect their personal music tastes while expanding their musical horizons and abilities.

TABLATURE is a system I use for some of the kinds of music I teach. It makes it possible to either transcribe music from oral traditions like blues or to play printed music very quickly. It's not a new system - it was common for many instruments, including keyboards, during the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

Morrissey Guitars built me a custom guitar, designed for my hands & playing styles. I've always played Martin dreadnoughts, but I needed a smaller guitar after some shoulder injuries. The more I looked, the less I found. Then I played a couple of Patrick's guitars - they were INCREDIBLE! Smaller than a dreadnought but with as much power, my guitar has a rich, balanced sound, without the boomy bass that has always been a problem to mic.

For a couple of years in the early 1980's, Cindy Mangsen, Carolyn O'Dell and myself did a couple of concerts a year as "The Three C's". We all loved the music we made - lush harmonies and fine instrumental arrangements weaving through our VERY wide musical backgrounds & resources. Then Cindy met Steve Gillette, Caroline had a couple more children, and I started touring more solo.
