Over time, the abnormal position enlarges your big toe joint, further crowding your other toes and causing pain. Bunions can occur for a number of reasons, but a common cause is wearing shoes that are too tight.

Gout is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness and tenderness in joints, often the joint at the base of the big toe. An acute attack of gout can wake you up in the middle of the night with the sensation that your big toe is on fire. Morton's neuroma may feel as though you are standing on a pebble in your shoe or on a fold in your sock. Morton's neuroma involves a thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes.
