With more than 25 years experience as a gynecologist and reconstructive vaginal surgeon, I have had the privilege to learn of the very personal needs of my patients. Labiaplasty is a procedure that can help the many women feel self-conscious about the outward appearance of their genitalia. They view their inner labia as abnormally long causing emotional or psychological distress during intimate encounters and/or while wearing tight-fitting clothing.

In other instances, women undergo a labiaplasty to alleviate symptoms that can arise from increased labia size including pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse as well as interference with exercise and normal daily activities.Labial minora reduction surgery involves a plastic surgery technique that reduces the large or uneven labia minora to a smaller, more comfortable size and shape.

This procedure targets loose skin around the clitoris either during labiaplasty or as an independent procedure. Excess skin on the sides of the clitoris often causes the clitoris to look enlarged or uneven. A labiaplasty itself may result in the appearance of a relatively larger clitoral area since the excess labia have been removed drawing the eyes to the clitoral region.

The visible area between the vagina and the rectum is called the perineum. This is the same area where episiotomies are repaired and tears during a vaginal birth may occur. Some women note scar tissue, loose tissue and skin tags (redundant skin) in this area. A perineoplasty aims to tighten the opening of the vagina and repair the aesthetic to the perineum.
