Different Drummer Pottery is a family-owned studio and gallery operating since 1980 in Maggie Valley, NC. Founded by Terance Painter, a Western Carolina University-trained artist with over 40 years of experience, we specialize in functional stoneware and porcelain pottery featuring unique, handcrafted glazes. Our studio combines traditional pottery techniques with fine art sculpture through bas-relief landscapes and decorative patterns. We also create Crock Drums, innovative ceramic percussion instruments that merge our passion for music and ceramics. Our commitment to quality is demonstrated through food-safe glazes free of toxic materials, developed through decades of rigorous testing.The studio, housed in a historic 1940s log cabin, welcomes visitors to observe our creative process firsthand. Terance's son Caden joined the business in 2018 after a decade in IT, bringing fresh perspectives to our craft. Our work has earned recognition including Best In Show awards at Mountain Heritage Day. We authored the inspirational book Centered, exploring the metaphor of pottery in spiritual growth, and offer studio tours to share our artistic journey with the community.

This family-owned pottery store has some unique styles of pottery to buy from. They come up with their own designs...beautiful glazes.. and plenty of mugs to pick from.

The most beautiful pottery I've seen in North Carolina. The colors and glaze are exceptional. You must visit the Different Drummer and experience the demonstration by Tate on the special drums he makes using pottery and walnut.

We stumbled across Terry's studio and were warmly welcomed by his mother. Sweetness all around. We were mesmerized by his pottery's energetic glaze and then again by his intricate carving. My favorite piece in the shop went home with me. A hidden gem.
