Founded in 1949, Davis Parent Nursery School (DPNS) is a non-profit parent participation cooperative nursery school possessing a long history of enriching families in the Davis community. Our program is play-based and allows children to grow intellectually, socially and emotionally through first-hand experiences.
Children can learn to make social contacts in groups - small and large, supervised and informal. Parents participate alongside our professional teaching staff to support the day to day activities of the school, which not only enriches the environment for our students, but also connects parents with each other and encourages community support as well as learning opportunities for the parents themselves.

What is a Cooperative
Report
A parent cooperative preschool is organized by a group of families with similar philosophies who hire a trained teacher to provide their children with a quality preschool experience. The preschool is administered and maintained by the parents. The parents assist the professional teachers in the classroom on a rotating basis and participate in the educational program of all the children.
DPNS Philosophy
Report
The Davis Parent Nursery School Laboratory is a DJUSD Adult Education family program of child and adult activities: a cooperative workshop in human relations whereby parents embark on a path of commitment with the Davis Joint Unified School District to better their parenting skills.
We believe that any school district will be enriched by our broad spectrum of ethnic and experiential backgrounds, and we expect our associates to contribute time and energy at an elevated level throughout their child's educational years. In addition, we recognize the need for our commitment to the excellence of the DJUSD to extend beyond our child's attendance.

Parent Participation
Report
Parents are asked to give of their time, energy, and talents to make DPNS' cooperative program successful. But it's well worth the effort! Through active participation at school, our parents gain a better understanding of their child's behavior and development, sharpen their parenting skills, and build long-lasting relationships with other families.

Teachers
Report
The high levels of education and experience held by our teaching staff allow DPNS to offer an exceptional preschool experience. All of our Directors have teaching credentials, and all have completed extensive coursework in early childhood education.
Additionally, our affiliation with Davis Joint Unified School District (DPNS Directors are DJUSD employees) and staff requirements we meet as a state-licensed preschool contribute to the strength of our program.Remarkably, and as a testament to our school, every one of our Directors attended DPNS as a participating parent with their own child(ren) - for some, this was 20-30 years ago!
