Growing up in Louisville at the boundary of a subdivision surrounded by farmland and woods I was lucky to spend countless hours in all seasons surrounded by nature, exploring caves and creeks. It certainly gave me a strong bond to wildlife and the environment. I was also fortunate to experience a childhood of world travel which I have continued in my adult life.
My travel experience and study of gardens of different cultures has provided me with expertise in creating and appreciating all forms of gardening from European Gardens, Japanese Gardens to Chinese and South East Asian Gardens. I came to Washington, DC to study Chinese at The George Washington University.

Services
New Dawn Gardens was founded in 1980 by Richard Miller who has degrees in both horticulture and landscape design. He subsequently trained in estate gardening at Dumbarton Oaks. Providing garden design, garden renovation, expert garden maintenance, organic pest control, tree and shrub plantings are just some of the many landscape and garden related services we provide.
Garden Consultation
Report
Richard Miller will walk through your garden with you, identifying and evaluating the health of your trees, plants, shrubs and perennials. He will evaluate plant vigor, site conditions and assess disease and pest problems along with drainage issues and plant placement. He will offer solutions and advice on organic and natural approaches to the problems your plants may be experiencing.
Design
Report
Computer design is now a standard mode for landscape designers to render plans for prospective clients and the software has matured since it was first introduced but old-school designers like myself eschew its use for several reasons.
I have seen plans that look good but do not completely connect with reality: More than a few times I have checked plans that specify installing plants (sometimes even large trees) in spaces where they would be short-lived or fail quickly.Sometimes plants are specified to be planted on top of manhole covers or utility boxes.

Installation
Report
The second pillar of our Landscape Construct is Installation. As with the other two, many contractors have taken short cuts over time and created an atmosphere of reduced quality by not paying adequate attention to "the small stuff"; details that may require more time and effort but will yield a superior result that holds up better under stress and over time.
Maintenance
Report
The third pillar of our triumvirate covers the follow-up and on-going care plants require to become established and thrive. Once a plant is in the ground and mulched, the name of the game is WATERING. While it is true that more plants succumb to over-watering, the initial stage of acclimating can require close attention to watering; a little extra water can be a good thing, at least in the beginning.
