Services
Basic troubleshooting usually takes an hour to complete and focuses on providing recommendations for any auto repairs that need to be made. We only charge for our time and will discuss any additional costs prior to beginning service. The Check Engine Light is linked to all the systems in a car and turns on when anything is amiss.
Electrical evaluations are tricky, there is no set time track down a broken wire or a bad connection; however, most jobs take less than three hours to complete. We have equipment designed to make electrical evaluations quicker but there are still times we have to take parts of the car off to track a wire.
Smoke testing, in some cases, is the only way to find a leak. For EVAP testing its essential. In some cases the gas cap needs to be replaced but in most situations there is a pinhole leak causing the check engine light to come on. Smoke testing is also a big help for small exhaust leaks. An exhaust leak can make the oxygen sensors turn on a check engine light.
It is frustrating when your car won't start and unfortunately almost every car owner has experienced this at some time. It may be hard to figure out if a car isn't starting but there are some symptoms that will give you an idea of which part is bad. If you try and start your car and nothing happens it might mean the cables are corroded and need to be replaced.
There is nothing worse than a car ride in the Texas summer without A/C. Figuring out what is wrong with an A/C can be frustrating, even for an experienced technician. The first question to ask yourself is if the A/C is blowing hot or not blowing any air at all. Then did the air get warmer over time or was it after one instant.

I have to leave a 5 star review for The Atypical Mechanic even though we had a disagreement/misunderstanding. Read on for the full story.
My car had a weird problem where the engine overheating light came on while I was driving and then instantly turn off. No error codes were thrown, so I figured it was faulty wiring. Found a different mobile mechanic on Yelp, and his diagnosis was that the temperature sensor was probably failing. After waiting a few weeks for the part, he replaced it and charged me his fee, and I started up the car to the exact same problem. I was not pleased.

Working with Jeremy at Atypical Mechanic was amazing!! Appointment was available next day for service at my home. They were in touch and responsive the whole time through Yelp. Mechanic arrived on time, did the necessary work in line with estimate, plus checked some other routine things out like brakes/tires/air filter/etc to let me know their status.

Jeremy came out and diagnosed it in under an hour and the problem is gone!
My 16-yr old vehicle is now sounding like I just drove it off the lot. This car will easily go 300k+ miles with the help of Atypical. I've also found their prices to be quite reasonable.

We had two awesome experiences - great repairs, good price, good communication (Fallon let us know when Jeremy was running late) - and really beyond the call of duty when it came to working on the engine. For example, Jeremy was replacing the spark plugs and noticed that one of the tubes had a bit of oil in it, he cleaned out the oil and documented which one it was, then he noticed that one of the coils had some moisture damage (from the oil) and he switched that one to a more prominent position - so it would be easier to access if it needed to be replaced (good planning!!!). These guys were absolutely amazing. Highly professional and courteous. They came out and even though it took a bit longer than they anticipated to show up, they kept me updated - so no complaints there. You can't predict how long car servicing will take - so super fair.

We've used the Atypical Mechanic 3 or 4 times over the past year and the service has been outstanding. Our personal car and business truck were stranded in the street and driveway so we logged on to their site and booked an appointment for them to come out to the house rather than pay for a tow to a garage. Booking the appointment online was super-easy, and the rates for repair were comparable or less than what it would cost if we went to a shop. The weather was miserable on New Years Eve, so they rescheduled me for New Years Day, which I really appreciated.
Jeremy came out and fixed the problem in 30 minutes. He even added some coolant to my a/c at not charge. I couldn't have been happier with the service and the price.

Excellent service!! The technician was professional and courteous. Unfortunately my appointment time was slightly pushed back due to the job he was working before me, but he was very communicative in letting me know what was going on and when to expect me.

For a few years, my rear passenger door's actuator (automatic locking mechanism) was broken. If I I didn't lock the door manually, my car would try to automatically lock all doors in vain. Been utilizing Jeremy and his team for several years now and can’t recommend him enough! Obviously, the convenience of having a mechanic come to you while at work or wherever you are is a huge perk! The quality of the work is superb as well! I had a problem with my gas tank a while ago that other shops couldn’t diagnose and Jeremy wouldn’t let up until he found a solution. Friendly, fast and fairly priced. Don't hesitate to give them a chance if you need a convenient solution. My battery couldn't be jumped so was going to cost quite a bit for a tow & didn't want to mess around trying to self install. They arrived on time and replaced the battery with a brand that I had specifically requested plus they performed additional inspections. Saved me a lot of stress & definitely will use them again if needed.

Jeremy came out and assessed our problem correctly the first time. I am normally skeptical of mechanics but when I said I would wait to do the repair he didn’t pressure me at all. The week of Thanksgiving, my service engine light came on, and to the dealer we went. They gave us a $2,200 quote and a timeline of "we'll get to it as soon as we can but are very backed up, it may be several days." Since we were traveling for the holiday and needed the vehicle repaired right away, and because the quote seemed astronomical, we scheduled an appointment online for 7am the next morning with The Atypical Mechanic, as a last hope for being able to get the car fixed and hit the road on time. A game changer. Thanks to fellow consumer reviews, I do already have my go-to brick and mortar auto repair shops I like but the rigmarole of dropping my car for no telling how long and how much – plus having to hire or enlist rides to and fro – is time consuming and inconvenient. So I somewhat reluctantly tried these guys and was impressed by the whole process, from online scheduling to completed repairs. The least I can do to say thanks for saving me a grand on unneeded car repairs is leave a 5 star review. Toyota dealer wanted 600-1k in repairs on my Prius. These guys came to my home at a convenient time, showed me under the hood, and compared with theirs. If nothing is wrong and factory manual doesn't even say you need certain repairs, then why get them? Honest to a fault and I will definitely use them again in the future.
