Oak Cabinets

The wood grain is heavier and more noticeable than on maple cabinets, so oak is a better choice for stained finishes than painted finishes. If you are interested in a more rustic look, we recommend alder cabinets or hickory cabinets.

Alder is a relatively recent addition to the mix as far as cabinetry goes. It started being used for furniture in the midwest in the early 2000's, and has grown in popularity ever since. Alder is a very hard wood with a tight grain. It is quite knotty, providing a rustic look, and equivalent in pricing to cherry.
