Plants are everything to us. They are what we eat, the fabric of our clothing and our building materials. Medicines come from plants and fragrances, too. Plants are the basis of the world's food chain, they keep our planet cool and filter pollutants from the air. Plants make the oxygen we breathe and are the beauty that surrounds us.
Nan Sterman can't stop talking about plants. Meet her in the supermarket and she'll tell you about the variety of peach in your shopping basket - where it was bred, the time of year it ripens, the best variety to grow in your own backyard and whether it needs another peach to pollenize it. Nan's love affair with plants and growing things started when she was a small child.

Media
Report
You don't have to travel far. Just tune on your television and search for KPBS public TV in San Diego, California, or visit us online at www. AGrowingPassion.com to find dozens of award-winning episodes available for viewing 24/7. For every episode, I search out places where plants grow, where plants are used, are eaten, worn, planted, bred, processed, bought, or sold.
Writing
Report
My computer long ago replaced pen and paper, but nothing replaces my interest and curiosity about everything involving plants and gardens, especially in regions with precious little rainfall (or snowfall). My background in botany (the science of plants) and biology are the backbone of my work. I write so readers can understand the concepts behind the content.
Garden Design
Report
I design every garden as a personal space, carefully crafted to suit the owners' tastes, complement the home's architecture, and thrive in the site's growing conditions. Each garden is individual; there is no one style or look, but every one is waterwise. Landforms curve and undulate, directing and collecting water, banking it in the soil to supply plant roots.
Garden Tours
Report
Each year, I lead a tour to see interesting gardens and meet wonderful gardeners around the world. We go behind-the-scenes and explore places that most garden tours miss, like meeting tulip breeders in Holland, visiting pepper growers in Costa Rica, and discovering an ancient quiver tree forest in in South Africa.
