Here's what most people don't realize. In the summer the roof can heat up to 140-150 degrees or more. It can literally be over 50 degrees hotter than the temperature outside if a building has a standard roof. That heats up the wood sheeting and radiates down through the attic heating up the 2x4's, insulation, and finally radiating through the drywall ceiling and ultimately into the living space.
