The year was 1986 and my wife and I had just purchased our first home - a townhouse in Southern Howard County. We had a small cocker spaniel at the time and wanted a privacy fence so she could enjoy the freedoms of her very first backyard. We sought out the usual estimates and soon thereafter, experienced sticker shock.
My past job history had included a variety of construction related pursuits and I thought to myself, "I can build this - and without breaking the bank." There was no Home Depot or Lowes at the time, locally owned Hechinger was king. So, I made multiple trips to the store in Columbia, purchased the materials and supplies I needed and successfully built my first fence.
