Athi's Story
Report
A love of football has been a constant in Coach Athi's life, and a way to deal with challenges. She's now using her passion to be a role model for younger girls. She's a Grassroot Soccer Coach in Khayelitsha, South Africa, one of the largest townships outside Cape Town. The environment can be tough, with a high rate of crime, and, in particular, violence against women and girls is a major concern.
David's Story
Report
David Kapata is a true Grassroot Soccer success story. He came to GRS as a participant and gained insight and understanding around the toll that AIDS had taken on his own family. He then channeled that new knowledge into helping others, becoming a GRS Caring Coach and subsequently a staff member, broadening the reach of our programs.
Hiv
Report
When it comes to HIV and AIDS, it's time to move the goalposts by working with youth to provide approaches tailored to their needs. Stigma and discrimination contribute to a fear of testing and a lack of support for HIV-positive individuals. Adolescent girls are particularly at risk, and are more than twice as likely to become infected than boys of the same age.
Sexual & Reproductive Health
Report
Adolescents deserve quality comprehensive sexuality education, access to sexual and reproductive health services, and the means to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights. GRS's innovative soccer-based programming provides critical gender, HIV, and SRHR education to adolescents in schools, at soccer structures, and in community centers.
Gender
Report
Our programs seek to address the unique needs of girls and young women, challenge negative gender norms, decrease gender-based violence, and engage boys and young men in creating more gender-equitable communities. GRS implements a girls-centred initiative that uses soccer to create a safe space for young women and girls, aged 13-16, where they can openly discuss their unique health issues and risks.
