Legal Services of Northern Michigan provides a full range of legal services in most areas of civil law for people who meet Federal poverty guidelines or who are 60 years of age or older. These services include: basic discussion of client rights; counseling; preparation of letters, documents, deeds, and pleadings; negotiations; administrative hearings; trials; and, in some cases, appeals, and community legal education presentations.

Legal Services of Northern Michigan does not provide service for criminal cases, traffic tickets or "fee-generating" cases. Services may be limited based upon funding levels and restrictions. The most important thing to do to protect your rights is to do all your business with bill collectors and creditors in writing. Keep copies of notes and letters and keep track of all phone calls. Tell anyone else about your bill, including members of your own family, neighbors or people at work. Send postcards about your debt, or letters in envelopes that say anything about your debt.
Medicaid

This is a general listing of Medicaid covered services that are available when medically necessary and furnished by enrolled providers. Some services are only for certain age groups or may require prior approval. The child must be under age 18 or 18, in high school full time and expected to graduate before age 19.
Supplemental Security Income

SSI is short for Supplemental Security Income. This is a federally funded program administered through the Social Security Administration. It is based solely on need. It pays monthly checks to people who are 65 or older, or blind, or have a disability and who do not own much or have a lot of income.
