Modern Transportation can trace its heritage in bulk materials transportation and handling to the coal mining industry in Western Pennsylvania in the 1950's. After developing a strong position in the coal sector, Modern moved into the transportation of coal for customers in that region. In 1987 a trans-load operator, ultimately a sister company to Modern, needed a carrier that could offer bulk delivery from a rail trans-load yard near Butler, PA.
