Hi, my name is John Stobbs. I've been a criminal defense attorney for about 25 years. Partly because I'm fluent in Spanish I have handled over 1000 federal criminal defense cases in St. Louis, MO and East Saint Louis, IL. I've also handled a couple hundred cases in Madison County, IL. I have been successful in fighting the government in trial and in the video above you can see some of the acquittals I have won in federal criminal jury trials.

Significant Cases

The word "significant" has a different meaning to different people. It would be easy for me to list ten cases where my client was acquitted or the charges dismissed and claim that case was "significant" because of the result. In actuality, some of the most "significant" cases I handled were significant because of how the outcome impacted me personally or how the outcome made a difference to my client.
Federal Drug Crimes

With the advent of mandatory minimum sentences and the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines in the 1980's, very little could be done to help a loved one charged with a federal drug crime. That changed when the United States Supreme Court in Gall and Booker made the Guidelines advisory as opposed to mandatory.

My white collar experience runs the gamut of federal white collar prosecutions from telemarketing fraud, to medicare fraud to tax fraud to mail and wire fraud. Often after I receive a positive result in a white collar case, clients will confide in me that they had previously spoken to another attorney, who painted a dire picture of their situation, prior to seeking my expertise.

When I first started practicing, tax cases were rare. Since I've been an attorney I've seen how run of the mill white collar crimes take on a tax element. In my opinion, the reason for this is so that the Government can pressure my clients to plead "guilty" because of the fear people have of the IRS.
Gun Crimes

The most difficult aspect of representing someone charged with a gun crime is that generally speaking federal laws provide stiff penalties for individuals found guilty of federal firearms violations. I started representing felons in possession of a firearm which is the most common gun crime charged.
