Then the old farm bell rings. You head in to eat with other campers and staff. The food is cooked from scratch, and it's delicious. There is a sudden hush: A doe and fawn sighted, a wood thrush singing, or a black rat snake slithering by? It's enchanting, and silence reigns. That is the kind of community you are in.

After an outlandish skit weighing food scraps, there are reminders to sign up for a camping trip, attempt the "What Is It", and to prepare for the butterfly census. Onwards into a full and active day! Workshops or your project for the morning, hikes, games or arts in the afternoon, and more possibilities for the evening.

About Us
Report
Welcome to a unique summer camp, one of the first nature camps for children in the nation, about to embark on its 57th season. Amongst summer camps, the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies stands out for its small size, for being a semi-academic program that supports a friendly, non-competitive community, and for living on the land according the standards we profess.
Our Mission
Report
Our wildlife sanctuary immerses us in nature, integrates learning with life, and cultivates personal growth and stewardship of the natural world. The purpose of the summer camp is to nurture in children and teens a respect for and sensitivity to the natural world through greater knowledge of self and nature.
Our History
Report
The Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies (BCWS) is part of the Burgundy Farm Country Day School (BFCDS) in Alexandria, VA. In the fall and spring, BCWS hosts school groups and in the summer it hosts a the summer camp. The summer camp was founded in 1963 as the Burgundy Wildlife Camp, with John Trott as director.
Facilities
Report
Campers live in two staff-supervised sleeping porches, where screens invite in fresh air and the night sounds. A timber frame barn provides additional gathering and workspace large enough to hold the entire camp. BCWS has its home in Cooper's Cove Wildlife Sanctuary, an open valley that extends into classic West Virginia hills and hollows.
Cooper’s Cove Conservation Fund
Report
We support the mission of the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies. It is vital that young people develop a love and appreciation of nature and our delicate ecosystem. The Cooper's Cove Conservation Fund (CCCF) was created after various members of the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies (BCWS) expressed concern about the health of the ecology of Cooper's Cove Wildlife Sanctuary and ongoing quality of the experience of those who use the facility.
