It's that time of the year again were Black Bear sightings are increasing throughout Maryland, including here in Harford County. Susquehannock Wildlife Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to protecting our native wildlife and its habitat in and surrounding the lower Susquehanna River basin through rescue, research, education, and conservation.

About the Society
Report
We exist for one reason, to protect wildlife. This may be done in many creative ways but it will always be the glue that binds us together as an organization. Whether it is through public education, conservation efforts, rescue, research or legislation, we will stand as a helping hand and voice for wildlife.
What to Do / Not to Do
Report
First, wear gloves, if possible - animals may bite or scratch to protect themselves. Also, wild animals commonly have parasites, like fleas, ticks or lice, and can carry disease. If a rabies vector species (bat, raccoon, fox, etc) comes in direct contact with a human it will have to be euthanized and tested for rabies.
Trail Camera Survey
Report
By analyzing the photos and video captured on these cameras without the presence of humans we have been able to learn what species are present in an area, what times of the day or night they are active, how they react to weather conditions, if they notice the trail cameras or not, and some of their unique habitats rarely seen once alerted to humans being in the area.
Eastern Copperhead – Behavioral Study
Report
Venomous snakes have been misunderstood and feared by humans for hundreds of years. The historic and current mischaracterization and demonization of snakes has led to widespread persecution and killings of snakes across the globe. In contrast to these fears and common misconceptions, multiple studies over the last two decades have revealed that venomous viperid species are passive and even cowardly.
Wood Turtle
Report
For being such a unique and charismatic member of its family, the wood turtle remains largely unrecognized and unknown by most people who live in and share its range. Named because of its distinct shell, which appears to have been carved from wood, the wood turtle is also occasionally known as "Old Red Legs, " because of its bright red-orange legs.
