The Amesbury Country Club was founded in 1922 when Bill Gowen and a group of local businessmen purchased the 110 acre Smith Farm on Monroe Street. Wayne Stiles designed the picturesque nine holes and by 1924 the course was ready for play. The course opened under the name Powder House Hill Country Club, but that name lasted only one year.

The club is operated by the Mellon Family along with several long time employees. Butch Mellon P.G.A., is the club Professional. His son Michael is the Superintendent and daughter, Maria, is the assistant clubhouse manager. Michael has been the superintendent at the club for the last 30 years. By his side the entire time has been course superintendent, Kevin Lariviere.
