Your contribution allows recent law graduates to train for a career in public interest and social justice law. LSA serves low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty. Our offices are located in Anniston/Gadsden, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma and Tuscaloosa.
LSA offices handle civil cases only. Each office has lawyers licensed to practice in Alabama and other staff who know how to help low-income people resolve their legal problems. The merger was intended to make more resources available for Legal Services in Alabama and position the Alabama civil justice community to better provide equal access to justice for all. The merger was part of a nationwide movement initiated by the Legal Services Corporation which required consolidation of many states' legal aid programs in order to provide more effective, efficient services.

Every year, thousands of low-income individuals across the state of Alabama seek free legal help from Legal Services Alabama (LSA) however, for every individual that is successful in obtaining help, there are even more who could not receive services due the demand for legal help among the poor in Alabama far exceeding our current staff's capacity.

LSA recognizes that each client's situation and legal issue is different. LSA must screen your household's income to see if you are eligible for our services. LSA also has special grants that are not income-based such as elder grants to assist clients 60 and over. To see if you qualify, please call us or apply online.

We cannot apply for or enforce child support orders. You can contact your local DHR office to apply for child support or for help with enforcement. Legal services programs have been in Alabama since the 1970s and have served financially-eligible, low-income Alabamians. In 2004, three legal service programs combined to form Legal Services Alabama to carry on the important job of helping eligible residents in need of legal assistance.

If you are a client seeking no cost civil legal services, please apply for LSA services HERE, or connect with your local Volunteer Attorney Program (VLP). Which VLP program you contact depends on where you live in the state. With your participation, Legal Services Alabama and our partners throughout the state are able to increase access to justice for Alabamians that live at or below the poverty level.
