Art Smith Aviation Academy
Website
Art Smith Aviation Academy (ASAA) is nestled within the heart of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Canada's largest fighter base. The roar of overhead jets provides the perfect inspirational tone for the complete aviation learning experience. The Academy is an 'alternative program school' within Northern Lights Public Schools.

We provide a K to 8 program in both English and French Immersion to all families in the Cold Lake area. The school also takes pride in being able to focus on the specialized needs of military dependants while supporting students of the area surrounding 4 Wing Cold Lake. Members of the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence lend a collective hand to the aviation program of the ASAA.

History of Schools on the Wing
Report
Until 1992, DND offered a full education program governed by National Defence Headquarters. In a cost cutting move in the early 1990's, the military turned over operation of schools on the Wing to local school jurisdictions. Over the last 20 years these jurisdictions have gradually built new facilities in the surrounding community and closed their schools on base.

Academics
Report
Art Smith Aviation Academy is unique in that it follows Alberta Education's curriculum for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and provides an aviation program that is designed to enhance the education of its students. This is accomplished by providing experiential visits to local Air Force aviation facilities including operational flying and maintenance squadrons, air traffic control units, meteorology, and so much more.
School Council
Report
ASAA School Council is participating in the Dough For $chool program through Boston Pizza. Here's how it works: After your visit to Boston Pizza, save your validated receipts and send them to school with your child. Each classroom will have an envelope for the receipts to be deposited into. ASAA will receive 5% of the total!
Kindergarten
Report
All Northern Lights elementary schools offer a full-day Kindergarten program five days a week. We enhance the provincially-mandated half-day Kindergarten curriculum with an Extension program based on Flight: Alberta's Early Learning and Care Curriculum Framework. The Kindergarten curriculum is taught by a certified teacher and follows Alberta Education's Program of Studies.
