The Wigwam Gift Shop opened in 1914 to greet travelers on the Mohawk Trail, one of the most beautiful drives in Massachusetts. More than a century later, it would be completely renovated as a Sky Bar, a Coffee House, a Cafe, a Bakery and a gift shop loaded with local crafts, ice cream, honey and maple syrup.

Although the store looks much different today than it did, the current mom and pop operators kept the same spirit to welcome travelers from near and far. The once popular roadside cabins were renovated in 2019 with modern comforts such as air conditioning, LED lights, and full bath with showers.

A drive east 4.5 miles along the Mohawk Trail from North Adams brings you to the Wigwam Western Summit. At sunset, the beauty of the sun disappearing into the Taconic mountain range while casting an orange veil over the sky is a vision indescribable.

As the first automobile-tourist gift shop in the 20th century, it came about through the investment of Mansfield sisters: Theresa, Helen, Mary, and Elizabeth, who in 1913 bought the site when the Mohawk Trail was still being constructed across the Hoosac Mountain peaks. In the early 1920s, the Mansfield sisters ran the shop in the summer and spent their winters in Florida.
