We are the Friends of the Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges, a nonprofit organization. Our mission is to support the work of the Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys Refuges protecting wildlife and the habitat needed for the wild to thrive. Many of us have Birding or Butterfly Life Lists to document all the birds and butterflies we've seen.

The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge now has its own Butterfly Life List. Here you can find pictures of every butterfly documented to have been found on the Refuge, with all the details you need to find every one of them. We even have a challenge group of butterflies that are probably there but haven't been seen yet.

Email us to volunteer for any of our projects below, and please note that some of these activities are limited due to the pandemic. Friends staff the Welcome Desk at Refuge Headquarters, answer questions, and direct visitors toward refuge adventures, allowing refuge staff to concentrate on other duties.

A motion to sign the revised partnership agreement was approved. The agreement has now been signed by all parties. Through the combined efforts of the 200+ Friends groups around the nation, the revisions to the original agreement were adequate to address our primary reservations. The initial requirement to deposit funds received by Friends on the refuge property into a government account, rather than our own Friends account was modified.

Behind the gates you sometimes find the best hiking, cycling, and wildlife observation. You are welcome to explore any of the former logging roads but please do not block the gate with your car in case a refuge vehicle or equipment needs access. Most are mowed regularly. Ticks and winged biting insects can be abundant.
