How do Black-capped Chickadees survive Maine winters? It's their big brains and good memories! Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary has three miles of trails and is just a mile from downtown Freeport! Maine Audubon initiatives bring together elements of conservation, community engagement, advocacy, and education.
Forestry for Maine Birds integrates bird conservation with forest management and planning by improving habitat for priority forest birds and a variety of other wildlife species and engaging woodland owners in forest stewardship. About Us
Report
Since 1843, we have been connecting people to nature through a science-based approach to conservation, education, and advocacy. The largest Maine-based wildlife conservation organization, Maine Audubon has eight wildlife sanctuaries, 10,000 members, 2,000 volunteers, and serves over 50,000 people annually.
Our History
Report
Maine Audubon traces its history back to 1843, when the Portland Society of Natural History was founded and dedicated to the promotion of knowledge in the various branches of Natural History. The Maine Audubon Society (originally the Maine Ornithological Society, founded in 1897) merged with the Portland Society of Natural History in the middle of the 20th century, combining collections and rededicating itself to its common purpose.
Mission and Overview
Report
Our mission: Maine Audubon works to conserve Maine's wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people in education, conservation, and action. Provide hands-on, experiential nature programs especially designed to excite curiosity and introduce the concept of wildlife stewardship to over 8,000 students a year.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Report
Just as biodiversity strengthens natural systems, the diversity of human experience strengthens conservation efforts for the benefit of nature and all human beings. Maine Audubon is committed to embracing human diversity in all the communities where we work. We are dedicated to increasing the diversity of our staff, board, volunteers, members, and supporters and "bringing nature home" to all people and all communities.
Chapters
Report
Our Chapters - each covering a unique part of the state - are key pillars of that community, and play a central role in carrying out Maine Audubon's mission. Each Chapter is led by a dedicated group of volunteers, and each provides creative, engaging events and programs for Maine Audubon members and the public.
