Some of the greatest explorers visited Prince William Sound. Vitus Bering, a Danish navigator, served in the Russian Navy and discovered Alaska in 1741. Georg Wilhelm Steller, the famous German naturalist, was a member of the Bering Expedition, which made landfall at Kayak Island, approximately 100 miles southeast of Whittier.

Phillips Cruises and Tours began in 1958 when tourism pioneers Brad and Helen Phillips, founders of our company, began operating in Prince William Sound with the vessel M/V Gypsy, an 85-foot vessel previously owned by John Barrymore. Unfortunately, that historic vessel was lost in the great 1964 Alaskan Earthquake.

As your Captain departs the Cliffside Marina, look back towards town to see Whittier glacier. Learn about the Native Alaskans who first settled in this region of Prince William Sound and how the military built the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel connecting Whittier to Interior Alaska.
