Residential mental health facilities and long-term mental health facilities often focus on pathology, or what is not working in their residents' lives. Our experience suggests that this approach may be counterproductive for promoting a sense of security and trust vital for individuals struggling with serious mental illnesses to "risk" practicing new ways of thinking and acting.

The Spirit of Gheel, Inc. is a private, non-profit residential psychiatric therapeutic community located in Kimberton, Pennsylvania approximately 30 miles west of Philadelphia. Our two residential facilities, Gheel House and Buttonwood Farm, are within walking distance of each other and are located in a rural setting of Chester County surrounded by woodlands, hiking trails, trout streams, horse farms and working farms.

It is our mission to provide mental health services in a compassionate, nurturant therapeutic community which fosters holistic growth and enables the individuals we serve to actualize their full potentials, in whatever directions that may lead. This is achieved through the consideration and respect of the uniqueness of each member of the community as they accompany one another on their individual paths to recovery.

We are located one hour west of Philadelphia and within driving distance of NYC, Washington, DC and Baltimore. From Philadelphia: Take the Schuylkill Expressway west to King of Prussia then take Route 76 West until you reach the Downingtown/Pottstown Exit #216. Once you exit take route 100 North towards Pottstown for approximately 10 miles until you reach Pughtown Road.

Your support will enable us to make desired renovations and upgrades to our physical plants, fund the acquisition of materials for new programs (e.g., greenhouse for horticulture therapy), purchase expanded supplies and equipment for art and music therapy programs, and provide scholarship assistance for clients and families unable to meet our full costs.
