Timbre
TIMBRE (pronounced TAMber or TIMber) is the "color" of music. It is what makes two voices sound different, even when singing the same song. It is why two winemakers, working with the same vineyards, make unique wine. As a terroir-driven winery, we make wines expressive of the places and times from which they came.

As winemakers, we channel those sites through our experience, adding our own mark- our TIMBRE- to the resulting wines. Founded by Joshua Klapper, TIMBRE WINERY is the culmination of years of hard work, and dedication to our craft. It is winemaking expressed through the universal language of musical sound.

Who We Are
Report
Josh's love of wine led him first into a career as a sommelier, culminating in a Wine Spectator Grand Award for the wine list at Sona Restaurant in Los Angeles in 2004. After working closely with some of the Central Coast's trailblazing winemakers, including Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist, Josh founded La Fentre Wines in Santa Barbara County, which in 2016 became TIMBRE Winery.
Winemaking
Report
We feel winemaking is a method of expressing terroir, and not just any terroir, but great terroir. The complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate. It includes the characteristic taste and flavor imparted to a wine by the environment in which it is produced.
Vineyard Sources
Report
The Santa Maria Valley is one of only two east/west facing valleys open to the Pacific Ocean on the entire Western seaboard. The orientation harnesses the cool ocean fog and air to keep daytime temperatures low and, coupled with historically low rainfall, creates a situation where vineyards benefit from a very long growing season.
