
Every week, Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) provides free legal assistance and representation on civil (noncriminal) matters to hundreds of the neediest residents in the city of Boston and 31 surrounding cities and towns. When they have nowhere else to turn, low-income families and individuals, elders, and people with disabilities look to GBLS for help to secure the most basic necessities of life.

GBLS on behalf of three individuals with disabilities filed the federal class action lawsuit in 2007.
Harper v. DTA advanced two core claims: DTA (1) didn't have adequate systems for providing reasonable accommodations, even when the agency agreed they were warranted; and (2) used everyday practices that screened out people with disabilities from SNAP (Food Stamps) and cash assistance programs, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

In addition, thousands of other poor families and individuals benefit from the systemic advocacy GBLS carries out on behalf of its clients. Increased safety for battered women and their children thanks to improved laws governing custody, visitation, and restraining orders.

GBLS represents low-income individuals and families in Boston and 31 additional cities and towns in the Greater Boston area, assisting individual clients to secure some of the most basic necessities of life as well as addressing systemic problems that adversely impact their lives. We also represent community groups in advancing the interests of their low-income constituents and provide community legal education.

Greater Boston Legal Services is petitioning the state Department of Early Education to revise its child care fee schedule and its policy of terminating parents who fall behind on payments. We know the second [a] child is terminated from early education, their life becomes exponentially more challenging.
