Tutoring takes place at local libraries in Hillsborough and Durham, North Carolina, but Zoom sessions are also available. The Zoom platform is works well, as we work on learning goals with individual students, including those who need special education services.
Activities vary between playing online learning games, reading online illustrated phonics books, creating shared Google Docs, using the Web to find reading material of interest, and shared workbooks, which include vocabulary crosswords and comprehension skills.In addition, individualized journals and student-created vocabulary word cards provide writing practice and hands-on learning.

The move to virtual learning has been particularly hard on kids with learning differences. With a group of students online at the same time, there is no room for individualized instruction, which is so necessary for children with dyslexia just learning to read and write. Because of Donna, Ruby grew in her skills at a time when most students were languishing.
