A Vietnam veteran, Steven became interested in the field of Prosthetics and Orthotics during his time spent working at a transitional hospital for the wounded. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1975 with a degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics. He then moved to Anchorage, Alaska and founded Northern Orthopedics in 1978, building its reputation and expanding the company to three locations in Southcentral Alaska.
