Good Samaritan was founded by a group of community leaders concerned about the high number of uninsured adults in our area. While based out of Holy Family Episcopal Church, the committee included people from all over the county and from different faith communities. Good Samaritan was incorporated in 2000 and received non-profit status in 2001.

Initially modeled after the Volunteers in Medicine clinic in Hilton Head, SC, Good Samaritan was a free clinic almost completely staffed by volunteers. Since opening, over 1000 community members have volunteered. The first employee, an Executive Director, was hired in 2004. Eventually, a part-time development director and a part-time nurse practitioner were added.
