Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. It uses the hands and feet for attack and defense. The ultimate goal of Taekwondo is to develop the character and personality of the practitioner through physical, mental and spiritual discipline. Taekwondo combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport and exercise.
It is also a form of meditation and a philosophy of living. By 1989, Taekwondo became the world's most popular martial art in terms of number of practitioners. Gyeorugi, a type of sparring, has been an Olympic event since 2000. At Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy, our mission is to teach Taekwondo with high standards which will instill in our students traditional values, respect, discipline, confidence, and compassion for all living things.
