It was founded by Dr. Joe Workman, who completed his ophthalmology training at Washington University in St. Louis. He was joined in 1956 by Dr. Charles Peebles who practiced full-time until retiring in 1993. Dr. Caroline Gibbes joined the practice in 1979 retiring in 2014. The office was first located on Bull Street, then Brabham Avenue and has been at its present location at 2601 Laurel Street since 1985.

She is a recent graduate of Palmetto Health-USC Ophthalmology Residency program serving as Chief Resident her last two years. A native South Carolinian, Stacy grew up in Lancaster, SC, the daughter of two ophthalmologists.

However, cataracts can be effectively treated with cataract surgery, the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the United States. Cataract surgery, which involves the removal of the cloudy lens and the implantation of a plastic artificial lens, is successful in over 98 percent of cases.
