A native Idahoan, Rod was raised in the Notus/Middleton area and graduated from Middleton High School in 1980. He grew up attending auctions and learning the business with his Dad. Having the desire to continue in the auction industry, Rod attended the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Montana, and graduated in 1983.
