Dr. Sweis earned her medical degree at Northwestern University in Chicago and then finished her general surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She returned to Northwestern University to complete her plastic and reconstructive surgery residency. Dr. Sweis holds certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is the former president of the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The Royal Service Children's Foundation conducted medical missions to Jordan to perform reconstructive surgery on children from 1996-1999. Each year, Dr. Sweis led a group of 12-14 people consisting of highly-regarded plastic surgeons, urologists, anesthesiologists, and nurses from Chicago to Jordan to operate on children in need.
